I’m going to start this review with a little public service announcement…
PLEASE read Meet the Parents first.
Seriously.
Do not just casually wander into book two thinking you’ll figure it out as you go because there is a very good chance you’ll be sitting there wondering what on earth everyone is talking about.
I actually left quite a bit of time between reading the two books and even I had to go back and give myself a little refresher on what happened in Meet the Parents before carrying on.
Once I’d reminded myself though…
OMG. I LOVED THIS.
The first book focuses on Gina meeting her husband’s parents and discovering that, shall we say, family relationships aren’t always quite what they appear to be.
This time, we’re flipping things around.
Now it’s his turn to meet Gina’s mum and dad.
And if you thought one set of in-laws could cause enough drama… apparently not.
I obviously don’t want to give too much away because this is absolutely a book where you need to experience everything as it happens, especially if you’ve already read the first one.
What I can say is that Emily Shiner absolutely nailed the cat and mouse element of this story. Everyone seems to have their own motivations, you’re constantly trying to work out who knows what, and just when you think you’ve got somebody figured out… think again.
It actually gave me very similar vibes to some of Freida McFadden’s books, which is a HUGE compliment coming from me.
There are twists, turns, secrets and those brilliant little moments where you suddenly realise something you thought you understood might not be quite as straightforward as you believed.
But importantly, it never felt dragged out.
Sometimes books with this sort of cat and mouse storyline can become a bit exhausting because you’re waiting forever for something to actually happen. This didn’t. The story kept moving, I stayed interested throughout and I genuinely wanted to keep picking my Kindle back up.
I also think I enjoyed this one even more because I already knew the characters from Meet the Parents. Once I’d refreshed my memory, I was straight back into their world and completely invested in what was going to happen next.
Final verdict
An absolutely brilliant second book and an easy five stars from me.
If you love Freida McFadden style psychological thrillers with secrets, suspicious characters, twists and a proper game of cat and mouse, I think you’ll really enjoy this series.
