When coming home ain’t the same …

It never gets much easier
walking through our front door.
Whether we’ve nipped out to the shop
or travelled somewhere more.

I still expect those tipity-tapity paws
racing faster than a train,
Sliding on the laminate floor…

But coming home ain’t the same.

You’d skid around the corner,
your little legs all out of line.
We’d laugh and scoop you up,
so grateful you were mine.

That welcome filled our hearts with joy,
no matter sun or rain…

Now silence greets us at the door,

And coming home ain’t the same.

We watch other families with their dogs,
tails wagging, running free.
We smile because we know that love,
the kind you gave to me.

You’re thought about each single day,
your memory will remain…

But every journey ends the same,

Because coming home ain’t the same.

We’d stay out just a little longer,
then hurry back to you.
Checking the camera every hour,
like silly pawrents do.

Even now I catch myself
thinking, “I’ll check on Mills again.”

Then my heart remembers…

And coming home ain’t the same.

You had us wrapped around your paws,
and honestly, you knew.
We’d bring you little treats back home,
because that’s what love will do.

Wherever life would let us go,
you came on every trail.
Through beautiful adventures,
woodland walks and wagging tail.

The world looked just a little brighter
with you in every frame…

Now every road leads home,

But coming home ain’t the same.

Our little routine never changed,
the washing in, bags put away.
Then straight to you for cuddles first,
before we’d end the day.

We’d clean your ears, you’d close your eyes,
then curl up soft and warm.
We’d shower, then all snuggle close…

Now coming home ain’t the same.

If I could change one single thing,
I’d do it all somehow.
For one more kiss, one more cuddle,
I’d choose that here and now.

One more bark.

One more face rub.

One more paw upon my knee.

One more little welcome home…

That’s all I’d ever need.

We know coming home just ain’t the same…

But love still runs to greet us.

We just can’t hear her paws anymore.
