This review genuinely pains me to write.
If you’ve read my reviews of Powerless, Reckless and Fearless, you’ll know how much I absolutely adored that trilogy. I was completely invested in Paedyn, the world Lauren Roberts created and everything that happened throughout those three books.
Then I discovered there were two extra books connected to the series.
I did my research beforehand and noticed the reviews weren’t exactly glowing, but I honestly thought people were being a bit harsh. I convinced myself I’d probably enjoy the last one because I loved the main trilogy so much.
Unfortunately…
They were right.
I really struggled with this one.
Without spoiling anything, Fearful takes place after the events of the main trilogy, and for me it just didn’t add anything meaningful to the story. Instead of leaving me feeling excited to revisit this world, I finished it wondering what the point of it all was.
That was probably the biggest disappointment.
The original trilogy wrapped everything up so beautifully that this almost felt unnecessary. It lacked the emotion, tension and character development that made books one, two and three so addictive. I kept waiting for that moment where everything would click into place and I’d understand why this story needed to exist…
It never came.
I hate writing negative reviews because I genuinely try to be fair. Every book takes an incredible amount of work to create, and I know that what doesn’t work for me might become someone else’s favourite read.
But I also want my reviews to be honest.
And honestly?
This just wasn’t good.
I’d much rather remember the incredible trilogy than this addition to it.
If you’re planning to read the Powerless series, my personal advice would be to enjoy the main three books and leave this one on the shelf. It didn’t enhance the story for me and, if anything, slightly took away from the perfect ending I’d been left with.
One final confession…
Yes, I finished it.
Of course I did.
I am physically incapable of not finishing a book.
I don’t know why I’m like this.
Is it hope that it’ll suddenly become amazing?
Is it because I know I’ll lie awake wondering how it ends if I stop?
Or is it simply a form of book-related insanity?
The jury’s still out.
Final verdict
A disappointing follow-up to what is genuinely one of my favourite fantasy trilogies. Whilst I absolutely loved the main series, this one simply didn’t justify its place for me and unfortunately became one of my lowest-rated reads of the year.
If book four ever arrives, I’m crossing everything that it captures the magic of Powerless, Reckless and Fearless… because those books deserve to be remembered for how brilliant they were.
