Well… there was absolutely no way I was stopping after book one.
By the time I finished Powerless, I was completely invested in Paedyn and needed to know what on earth she was going to do next. So naturally, I downloaded Reckless immediately because self-control clearly isn’t one of my strengths when it comes to books.
One thing I absolutely loved about this sequel is that it picks up almost exactly where the first book finishes. I always appreciate when an author does this because there aren’t huge time jumps or moments where you’re trying to work out what’s happened in between. It feels like you’ve never really left the story, and I was straight back into the action from the very first chapter.
Reckless follows Paedyn as she continues navigating a world that seems determined to make life as difficult as possible for her. The stakes are even higher this time, relationships become more complicated and every decision feels like it carries enormous consequences.
Going into this, I did wonder how the story was going to stretch across three books. Sometimes trilogies can feel like they’re dragging things out for the sake of it.
Thankfully… this didn’t.
Instead, Lauren Roberts expands the story naturally, giving the characters room to grow whilst introducing new challenges that kept me completely invested. Rather than feeling like a filler book, Reckless felt like an essential part of the journey.
By this point, I wasn’t just reading for the plot anymore. I genuinely cared about the characters. I found myself celebrating their victories, stressing over their decisions and constantly wondering what disaster was about to unfold next.
The world-building also continued to impress me. Because I’d already learned the rules in Powerless, I could simply enjoy being immersed in the story without trying to figure everything out. It made the whole reading experience even better.
And yes… once again I found myself staying up later than I should have because stopping at a sensible chapter simply wasn’t an option.
Final verdict
A fantastic sequel that builds perfectly on everything I loved about Powerless. It raises the stakes, develops the characters brilliantly and leaves you even more desperate to find out how the trilogy will end.
Safe to say I’m now fully invested in Paedyn’s story… and there was absolutely no chance I wasn’t picking up book three.
