I did it.
I finally escaped the AJ Carter rabbit hole.
After what felt like a hundred psychological thrillers in a row (slight exaggeration… maybe), I decided it was finally time to tackle the ever-growing TBR list. Powerless is book 1 of a trilogy and had been sitting on there for ages, silently judging me every time I downloaded another AJ Carter instead.
I’m so glad I finally picked it up.
Now, I won’t lie, this book took me a little while to get into. The first quarter had me wondering if fantasy was really my thing. There are new worlds, different rules, unfamiliar terminology and quite a lot to take in at the beginning.
But then…
Something clicked.
Before I knew it, I was completely invested.
Set in a kingdom where people with extraordinary powers rule over those without them, the story follows Paedyn, an ordinary girl trying to survive in a world where being powerless could cost her everything. When circumstances throw her into the spotlight, she’s forced to navigate dangerous trials, impossible choices and people who are hiding far more than they first appear.
From that point onwards, I couldn’t put it down.
I got serious Hunger Games vibes whilst reading, and I mean that as a huge compliment. There was the same tension, high stakes and constant feeling that nobody was ever truly safe. I found myself becoming completely attached to the characters and desperately needing to know what was going to happen next.
The world-building, which felt a little overwhelming at first, suddenly became one of my favourite parts of the book. Everything started making sense and I found myself completely immersed in the story.
And yes… I absolutely stayed up far later than I should have because I kept saying, “Just one more chapter.”
We all know how that ends.
The chemistry between the characters, the action, the suspense and the emotional moments all worked so well together. By the time I reached the final chapters, I wasn’t just reading the book… I was living in it.
Final verdict
A fantastic fantasy that completely exceeded my expectations. It may take a little time to settle into the world, but once it does, it’s incredibly addictive. If you enjoy books like The Hunger Games, strong female characters, high stakes and a story that refuses to let you put your Kindle down, this is absolutely one to add to your TBR.
Five very well-deserved stars from me… and now I completely understand what all the hype was about.
