My Review No Spoilers Promise

Yes… I went back for another AJ Carter.

At this point, I think it’s becoming a personality trait.

After my last couple of AJ Carter reads hadn’t quite reached the dizzy heights of some of his earlier books, I was hoping this one would bring me back to why I became such a fan in the first place.

It definitely did a better job than the previous one… but for me, it still wasn’t quite one of his five star reads.

The story follows Rachel, whose life begins to unravel after the death of her husband. Hoping for a fresh start, she joins a social app and meets someone who initially seems charming and kind. Before long, however, what begins as a promising new relationship spirals into something much darker. As the obsession grows and those around her struggle to believe what’s happening, Rachel is forced to question who she can trust and how far she’ll have to go to finally escape.

I have to admit, I very nearly shelved this book.

In fact, I was convinced I wasn’t going to finish it.

Now, if you know me, you’ll know that’s a pretty big deal because I have never shelved a book. Ever. Once I commit to reading something, I finish it. It’s a blessing and a curse really… mostly a curse when I’m not enjoying myself. 😂

Thankfully, this was one I managed to read in a single sitting, and I’m really glad I stuck with it.

The beginning took me a little while to get into. I found myself struggling to keep track of the different points of view and couldn’t quite work out where the story was heading. But then everything suddenly clicked. Once I understood how the different perspectives fitted together, I found myself much more invested and the story started flowing really well.

The premise itself is incredibly unsettling and explores obsession, manipulation and the feeling of not being believed when something is clearly very wrong. It creates a constant sense of unease, and once the story got going I genuinely wanted to know how everything would unfold.

Final verdict

Not my favourite AJ Carter book, but definitely stronger than the last one I read. It takes a little patience to get into, but once everything starts falling into place, it becomes a much more enjoyable read.

Three stars from me, but don’t let that put you off. Sometimes it’s all about finding the right AJ Carter book… and luckily for me, there are still plenty more to choose from.
