My Review No Spoilers Promise

Another AJ Carter book?

Absolutely. Sorry… not sorry.

The premise of this one immediately caught my attention because it gave me serious Married At First Sight vibes, and if there’s one thing I’m going to click on, it’s a psychological thriller with strangers, relationships and secrets. I was intrigued before I’d even turned the first page.

The story follows Blaise, who signs up for a brand new reality TV show in the hope of changing her life. She marries a complete stranger on a secluded island, but what starts as an exciting social experiment soon begins to feel much darker. As people start disappearing and strange things begin happening behind the scenes, it quickly becomes clear that this isn’t your average dating show.

Honestly, the concept was brilliant.

I could completely picture it as a Netflix series and found myself wanting to know what was really happening behind the cameras. AJ Carter does a great job of creating an atmosphere where nobody knows who they can trust, and I loved the mystery surrounding the production team and the island itself.

As always, AJ Carter’s writing is incredibly easy to read. I flew through the chapters, and the story got going quickly without loads of unnecessary build-up. That’s one of the reasons I keep coming back to his books. They’re perfect when you want something addictive that doesn’t require a spreadsheet to keep track of who’s who.

However…

Now all the AJ Carter fans, please don’t come for me.

This one just wasn’t my favourite.

For me, it started really strongly and I was completely invested, but as the story went on it became a little bit… silly. There were moments where I found myself thinking, “I’m not sure I’d believe that,” and it lost a little of the realism that I usually enjoy in AJ Carter’s books.

That’s not to say it was a bad book, because it definitely wasn’t. I still enjoyed reading it, I still wanted to know how it ended, and I still finished it quickly. I just don’t think it reached the same level as books like The Perfect Tenant, Make Him Leave or The Sister-in-Law.

Maybe my expectations were just a little too high because AJ Carter has set the bar so high with so many of his other thrillers.

Final verdict

A really unique premise, an addictive start and plenty of mystery, but for me the story lost its way a little towards the end. I’m giving this one three stars because I always want my reviews to be honest, even when it’s one of my favourite authors.

And don’t worry… my very next read was another AJ Carter book to soothe the soul. Maybe this one just wasn’t the right fit for me.
