My Review No Spoilers Promise
There are some authors whose books you pick up with complete confidence because you already know you’re going to enjoy them.
Keri Beevis is one of those authors for me.
The moment I started this book, I knew I was in good hands and before long I found myself doing something that every bookworm will understand… counting down the hours until bedtime so I could get back into the story.
Honestly, I could not wait to climb back into bed each night and pick my Kindle up.
The story follows a woman looking for a fresh start after her divorce, moving to a picturesque Norfolk village that seems like the perfect place to begin again. But as with any good psychological thriller, appearances can be very deceiving.
When she befriends Hope, a woman connected to a decades old mystery that still hangs over the village, it quickly becomes clear that there are secrets buried beneath the postcard perfect surface.
What I loved most about this book was the atmosphere. Keri Beevis creates such a strong sense of place that I felt completely immersed in the story. The village setting feels charming on the surface, but there is an underlying tension throughout the book that keeps you constantly on edge.
The mystery itself was brilliantly paced. Every time I thought I had an idea of where things were heading, another piece of information would emerge and send me in a completely different direction. The story keeps unfolding layer by layer, revealing just enough to keep you desperate for the next chapter.
I also really enjoyed the friendships and relationships throughout the book. The characters felt believable and well developed, which made me even more invested in finding out the truth.
And as always with Keri Beevis, there were plenty of moments where I found myself thinking, “Just one more chapter,” before realising an hour had disappeared.
Final verdict
A gripping psychological thriller packed with secrets, suspense and a mystery that keeps you guessing until the very end. The atmospheric village setting, engaging characters and steadily building tension made this an easy five star read for me.
If you enjoy thrillers where everyone seems to be hiding something, this is definitely one to add to your list.
