My Review No Spoilers Promise
After a few different reads, I found myself doing what I always seem to do when I need something reliable… hopping straight back onto the AJ Carter train.
At this point, his books have become a bit of a comfort read for me. Not because they’re cosy (they definitely aren’t), but because I know I’m going to get an easy to read thriller that keeps me entertained and usually catches me out with at least one twist.
When I first realised that a huge portion of this book takes place in an attic, I did wonder how AJ Carter was going to pull that off. Let’s face it, “person in an attic” doesn’t exactly scream action packed thriller.
I was wrong.
Very wrong.
What could have felt repetitive or claustrophobic actually worked brilliantly. The story cleverly moves between the present and the past, gradually revealing more information and keeping you constantly invested in what is happening. Every time I thought I had a handle on the situation, another piece of the puzzle would emerge.
The switching between timelines was one of my favourite parts of the book. It kept the story moving and gave just enough information to keep me hooked without revealing too much too soon.
As always with AJ Carter, the pacing is spot on. The chapters are short, the writing is easy to follow and there is always a reason to read just one more chapter. Before I knew it, I had flown through the book in a matter of days.
I also loved how the confined setting actually added to the tension. Instead of feeling restrictive, it created this constant sense of unease that had me wanting to know how everything was going to play out.
Final verdict
Another fantastic AJ Carter thriller that proves you do not need loads of locations or a huge cast of characters to create an addictive story. Cleverly paced, full of suspense and impossible to put down.
If you’re looking for a quick thriller that keeps you engaged from start to finish, this is definitely worth adding to your Kindle.

Me at the start: “A whole book set in an attic? Really?”
Me three days later: “Fine AJ Carter, you win again.” 📚😂👀
